Klingenhorn Castle (Canton of Graubünden)
Klingenhorn Castle

The ruins of the former Klingenhorn Castle lie above Malans in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .

location

The ruins of the hilltop castle are 934  m above sea level. M. more than 600 meters high above the village on an elongated rocky head south of the Ülltobels. The facility can be easily reached from Malans via a forest path (no driving) in about three quarters of an hour. The way to the ruin is not specially marked as such; good map material is essential.

Surname

Here the name refers to the location of the castle on a ledge that emerges on the mountain flank above Malans and the ravine of the Üllbach slopes steeply on one side. (Old High German klingo , Middle High German sound , which meant something like mountain stream, ravine or rushing water) On the other hand, the insignificant protrusion within the entire mountain flank hardly had its own field name until the castle was built; the builder chose the name rather because of the topology found.

investment

The castle hill is separated from the mountainside by a perhaps artificially enlarged neck ditch . The keep has been preserved up to a height of three storeys, the top section is in a poor structural condition and overgrown with undergrowth. Individual traces of Rasa Pietra plaster with grouting can be seen. There are also traces of plastering and beam holes inside the tower, from which the height of the floors can be read. The inside of the tower is covered with rubble and undergrowth.

A loop window on the first floor was broken out into a narrow entrance to the tower. The high entrance was walled up on the second floor , next to it there are two smoke outlets and a narrow notch. The determination of the wall opening on the third floor is no longer recognizable. To the west, walls of an outbuilding have been preserved. The remnants of the bering mentioned by Clavadetscher / Meyer are hardly recognizable. On the north side, beam holes indicate other buildings. To the west, on a lower terrace, lay a wide outer bailey .

history

Written documents about the construction of the castle are missing. It is assumed that it was built in the early 13th century. It is conceivable that Klingenhorn came to the von Matsch family through inheritance in the 14th century , as Ulrich II von Matsch was married to Margarethe von Vaz .

On March 12, 1372 Ulrich pledged his creditor Ulrich von Underwegen the vestin Klingenhorn located ob Malans with the Malans court for 200 marks. The castle should still be open to the governors of Matsch. On June 28, 1420, Vogt and court lord of Malans Ulrich Seger lent goods on the Klingenhornberg, but stipulated that they should be returned due to personal use. The document shows that the Malans court legally belonged to Klingenhorn Castle and that it was apparently not inhabited in 1420. On October 2nd, 1441, a document is mentioned in a document that belonged to the vesti Klingenhorn .

Around 1470 the castle came into the possession of the von Schlandersberg family. On July 26, 1497, Diepold von Schlandersberg and his wife Ursula von Sigberg gave their rights to the Klingenhornerberg as an inheritance to Hans Sutter von Malans. However, they stipulated a return if they would uffbuwen the Klingenhorn castle against . Klingenhorn must have been in ruins by the end of the 15th century.
