history

Coat of arms of the Lords of Juvalt

Innerjuvalt was probably built around 1250 by the lords of Juvalt . In 1342 a court settled a dispute between the brothers Albrecht and Bertram von Juvalt on Hochjuvalt. In exchange for a pension until his death, Bertram left the castle with its people and goods to his brother. The castle Hochjuvalt with its associated part of the rule was sold by Eglolf I von Juvalt the Rietberg. Shortly before his death, Johann von Rietberg gave his castle Rietberg and the Hochjuvalt to his uncles von Landenberg. Shortly afterwards, they sold Hochjuvalt Castle with all of its rights to the Bishop of Chur for 2500 or 3500 guilders. In the second half of the 14th century the castle appears several times in the documents. According to the Domleschger Bundesbrief of 1423, several aristocrats had to make their castles available to the federal government, including Rudolf II with the vesty of the indians Jufalt .

From the middle of the 15th century, the von Juvalts seemed to have lived in a courtyard at the foot of the mountain. In 1462 the castle of Elisabeth von Juvalt, born von Heidelberg, widow of Rudolf II the Last on the Inderjuvalt, was sold to her daughter Junker Pedrutt von Wannis for 500 Rhenish gold gulden ( ... daz Bergschloss ... item huss and hofraite under the same castle Juvalt, plus the infang daby and thus the lantstras gat ). Hochjuvalt was probably abandoned around 1500 and it was mentioned as a ruin around 1550 . In the last few decades the castle was uncovered and restored by the Graubünden Castle Association.

Innerjuvalt is owned by the Domleschg Castle Association. The habitable tower with its coat of arms paintings can be rented for private events during the summer months. It is open to the public on August 1st.
