The ruins of Vogelberg Castle are located near Waltensburg / Vuorz (municipality of Breil / Brigels ) in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .
location
The ruin of the hilltop castle is 1240 m above sea level. M. on a narrow plateau above the road from Waltensburg to Andiast on the edge of the Val Mulin ravine. It is separated from the meadow by a shallow ditch. The castle can be reached from the valley station of the chairlift via a hiking trail in around half an hour.
Surname
The name Vogel (s) berg has appeared in the documents since Ulrich Campell . The use of the genitive s, which the chroniclers Fortunat Sprecher 1617 and Nicolin Sererhard 1742 mention, speaks against a connection with a bird. Presumably the name can be traced back to an owner named Vogel. The Romansh name Cafoghel can also be traced back to "Casa Vogel" (Vogel house).
investment
Of the whole complex, only the remains of a rectangular tower up to a height of two storeys have survived. It has an extension of about 9 by 8 meters. The walls are 1.5 to 1.8 meters thick. The walls consist of large stream pebbles in stock. The neatly worked corner stones with chipped edges, which stand out in color from the masonry, are striking.
The complex is heavily overgrown and rubble lying around indicates that the remains of the wall are slowly falling apart.
history
Written documents about the origins and history of the castle are completely missing. Due to the way it was built, it can be assumed that it was built in the 13th century. It is conceivable that Vogelberg Castle is the previously unlocated Stotznstein Castle : On November 28 or 29, 1323 a Jacobus de Stotznstein was killed in the service of the church of Chur near the village of Rueun .
