What has been preserved is a mighty remnant of the wall of a massive residential tower with a pentagonal floor plan. The eastern part has disappeared except for a few remains. The interior of the tower is overgrown and filled with rubble. The wall consists of warehouse masonry made of large blocks, the wall thickness is 2.8 to 3 meters. What is striking is a very good corner bond made of bossed cuboids with precise edges. In some places there are spots with reddened Rasa Pietra plaster . The following openings can be seen in the preserved west wall: on the demolition wall, an exit to a balcony, next to it a loop window and a toilet bay . In the plaster of the wall passage leading to the lavatory bay there is an inscription that was subsequently incised: JOH. GAUDENTIUS CASTELBERG 1704.
Presumably there were four floors in the tower: two cellars, a main floor and an attic. Nothing is known about the shape of the roof, and an extended attic cannot be ruled out.
In 1811 and 1904, large quantities of coins were found at the foot of the castle rock, especially coins from Charlemagne and Desiderius, King of the Lombards . Presumably they came into their hiding place around 790 and are not related to Grüneck Castle.
history
Neither the castle nor the Grüneck family are mentioned in a document. The construction speaks for a dating around the turn of the 12th to the 13th century. In 1515 an interest rate from ainem goutt zuo Inlantz Gryenegg is mentioned in an interest book of the Dominican monastery of St. Nicolai in Chur .
The Schmid von Grüneck have only had their name since the 16th century, when the castle was probably already abandoned. Smith master Jacob from Ilanz succeeded in 1544, after he had been a captain in the imperial service, in receiving the title "von Grüneck" from Karl V. His son Hans Jakob received from Archduke Ferdinand of Austria in 1583 an additional confirmation of the nobility and coat of arms for himself and his three brothers.
The Schmid von Grüneck played an essential role in the administration of the three-confederation state . They provided officials in the Valtellina and were military leaders in the European armies of the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1836 the last female Schmid von Grüneck of the Ilanz line died.
