The sparse ruins of the former Löwenstein Castle lie at 790 m above sea level. M. above the district of Casanova in the municipality of Ilanz in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . Burgplatz lay on a rock head sloping steeply to the south above the cantonal road Laax - Ilanz.
investment
Of the rectangular wall tracks measuring 16 by 22 m, which Clavadetscher / Meyer discovered in the early 1980s, hardly anything can be seen today. The hilltop is heavily overgrown and it is no longer possible to determine what the complex might have once looked like. A corner of the wall of a foundation has been preserved in the southwest and a remnant of a wall in a suspected traverse in the northwest. The numerous stones and debris indicate handsome buildings.
history
There are no written documents about the origins and history of the castle. The location is based on the description of the chronicler Ulrich Campell from the 16th century: Löwenstenium ad Antium inde remotum Grüneccium (Löwenstein near Ilanz and a little further away from Grüneck ). Since the name Löwenstein fits better to a free-standing castle than to a noble tower in the city, it can be assumed that Campell meant the complex described here.
The Lords of Löwenstein are first mentioned as witnesses in 1275, the last time around 1303. They are attested as militis senoiris (knights).
