The Castle Alt-Aspermont is the ruins of a hilltop castle above Trimmis in Chur Rhine Valley in the Swiss canton of Grisons .

location

The ruin lies at 768  m above sea level. M. south high above the "Molinära" estate, the former episcopal farm, on a rock spur and can be easily reached via a marked, steep hiking trail in around 20 minutes. The facility is protected on the mountain side by a natural saddle-shaped ridge.

The foundations of a rectangular tower on the highest point of the rock have been preserved. A wall joint between the walls indicates that the northwestern remnant of the wall is older than the southwestern one. The tower collapsed on April 11, 1878; a photograph from 1875 shows it still with three walls that towered five storeys high. The southern section has slipped. A cistern on the lower terrace in the southwest, still observed by Erwin Poeschel in 1930, can no longer be seen.

Alt-Aspermont was probably founded by the Lords of Aspermont , who were first mentioned in a document in 1170 with Swiker, Ulrich, Heinrich and his son Ulrich as witnesses. They are later mentioned as ministerials to the Chur bishop . According to an entry in the “Buoch der Vestinen”, Bishop Heinrich von Montfort (1251–1272) bought the castle:… vesti Aspermunt ob den hag zum Gotzhus and kouft . In 1275 the barons of Vaz received the castle zu Leibgeding, it remained in the possession of the Vazer until 1284. Then there were disputes up to an arbitration tribunal in 1299 in which Johann von Vaz waived his claims.

In 1328 the castle was pledged by Bishop Johann to Ulrich von Aspermont, after his death in 1338 to the brothers Ludwig and Walter von Stadion . In 1354 the bishop pledged it to Heinrich and Martin Buwix. After various changes of ownership, Alt-Aspermont was besieged by the people of the church in 1452 in the shame feud ; In a federal arbitration award, the episcopal garrison was assured free withdrawal. In 1496 the bishop sold the castle to Knight Hartmann Rordorff in Zurich. Aspermont was administered by episcopal bailiffs until 1524 and at times also served as a prison. According to the 2nd Ilanz article , which abolished the power of the bishop in secular matters, the castle was abandoned and began to crumble.
