The ruins of Heidenberg Castle are located in the municipality of Obersaxen in the Swiss canton of Graubünden .
location
The sparse remains of the hill fort are at 950 m above sea level. M. on a mighty rock head directly above the village of Tavanasa . Access is from the quarry above Tavanasa, climbing steeply through an impassable rockfall area. The rock head can be reached after about half an hour from the east.
Surname
A connection with the word heather as a landscape designation is out of the question given the location of the castle in the steep terrain. Rather, a connection with the word “pagan” for “the unbaptized” or its adjective with the meaning of “pre-Christian” or “ancient” is to be assumed. It is conceivable that the immigrating Walser called the crumbling walls that. It is unclear whether they understood –berg as a synonym for –burg or whether they called the rock on which the ruin stands.
investment
The ruins of a tower with the ground plan of an irregular square have been preserved; the wall thickness is around 1.7 meters. The heavily overgrown remains of a circular wall branch off from the tower in a south-westerly direction , following the southern edge of the rock. More barely recognizable wall traces lead to the northern rockfall. Other traces of walls or buildings are missing.
history
There are no written documents about the origins and history of the castle. Based on the found remains of the wall, it can be assumed that it was built in the 11th or 12th century. The lack of written sources could indicate that the castle was abandoned as early as the 13th century and / or was only used temporarily.
