Frederik "Fred" Pleitgen (* 1976 in Cologne ) is a German journalist .

Life

Frederik Pleitgen is the son of the former WDR manager Fritz Pleitgen . He studied North American Studies at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and at the Free University of Berlin . He then spent a year at the School of Journalism of the New York University and received a 2004 grant from the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in San Fernando Valley . In 2005, Pleitgen received an Arthur F. Burns Fellowship at the International Center for Journalists in Atlanta .

Pleitgen worked in the ZDF capital office and in the RTL capital studio. From 2000 to 2006 he worked as a reporter for the broadcaster n-tv . Then he switched to the US broadcaster CNN . He reported from Iraq , in October 2010 from Pakistan and in 2011 on the revolution in Egypt and the civil wars in Libya and Syria .

From May 2013 to February 2015 he moderated the RTL Nachtjournal, alternating with Ilka Eßmüller . However, he continued to work as a CNN International correspondent in Germany and accompanied the German team at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil as a correspondent for the program “CNN World Sport”. After leaving RTL in February 2015, Pleitgen became a full-time Senior International Correspondent for CNN International in London . In the same year he starred in the film The Martian - Save Mark Watney a CNN spokesman. As a foreign reporter in the Middle East, Pleitgen received the Hanns Joachim Friedrichs Prize 2017 together with two others .
