The Castel mountain is the ruins of a hilltop castle below Luven at the entrance to the Val Lumnezia in the canton of Grisons in Switzerland.

The four-storey keep has a square floor plan with a side length of nine meters and a wall thickness of around 1.8 meters. The rather irregular masonry consists of boulders and rubble stones . The corner stones with bosses are partly made of tuff . The tower probably had a protruding wooden superstructure. The arched high entrance with tuff walls in the north-east wall is well preserved. The remains of the external plaster that were visible 20 years ago have practically disappeared. On the southwest side, at the level of the 4th floor, there are remains of an abortion . The stone consoles of the bay window are still preserved, the door was later walled up. The tower has only a few notch-shaped windows. Bar holes can be seen through an opening inside. Strong reddening inside the tower suggests a fire. The tower cannot be entered.

Overgrown, crumbling remains of a curtain wall indicate the scope of the rectangular complex. There are no references to the location of an entrance gate. In the valley-side corner of the Bering, faint remains of an outbuilding can be seen.

history

There are no written documents about the history of the facility. The tower is believed to have been built in the first half of the 13th century. Exploratory excavations from 1968/69 revealed only a few small finds (knife blade around 1300, animal bones, fragments of dishes), which suggests that the castle was only occupied for a short time.

Apparently Castelberg served the episcopal vassals of Castelberg from the Ilanz area as a residence; they are first mentioned in 1289 with Wilhelm. A document from 1391 … ze Luuens ain huob called colonia sur castiels…. certainly refers to Castelberg.

In the period that followed, von Castelberg's appear more often in the Rhaetian documents, mostly in connection with the bishop. As his vassals, they held various fiefs and offices. Between 1461 and 1468 Rudolf von Castelberg is attested as episcopal Vogt in Val Lumnezia. The expansion of the holdings of the von Castelberg into Schams , Domleschg and Vorarlberg meant that Castelberg Castle was abandoned in the early 14th century. The castle was already in ruins in the late Middle Ages .

At the turn of the 15th to the 16th century, the von Castelberg family split into two lines. One branch stayed in Ilanz, the other settled in Disentis . The castle is still owned by the von Castelberg family today.
