The Großer Vogelsand lighthouse stood in the southeastern North Sea in the area of the Outer Elbe .
construction
The lighthouse was built in 1973/1974 for 15 million DM and served to mark the Elbe fairway and as a sector light to mark several side fairways . The lighthouse carried guide lights , warning lights and orientation lights . It was controlled fully automatically from Cuxhaven via radio relay .
In total, the lighthouse had three precision sector lights, a rotating optic and a belt optic for several guiding, warning and orientation lights. There was also an acoustic warning system (air-fog sound system) and a radar beacon .
Due to more recent technical developments and a relocation of the Elbe fairway, the lighthouse became superfluous at the end of the 1990s and was switched off as a beacon. The fog signal was in operation until 2004.
The upper part of the tower was dismantled on December 16, 2008 and brought to Bremerhaven . The tower shaft, which was also dismantled, was replaced by a steel tube that continues to serve as a navigation mark without lights .
