The lighthouse Reading ( Hebrew מגדלור רדינג) (Also Lighthouse Tel Kudadi , Lighthouse Hayarkon or Lighthouse Tel Aviv ) is a disused lighthouse in Tel Aviv , Israel . It is located near the beach on the north side of the mouth of the Yarkon River, at the foot of Tel Aviv's southern breakwater . It got its name from the nearby Reading Power Station .

history

The British authorities had the lighthouse built in 1934–1935 to allow ships to safely pass the shore and to warn of the sandbars. The construction was carried out by a French company using local Arab workers.

During the construction a tell was found which was named Tel Kudadi. The tell was excavated from 1936 to 1938, leaving two remains of Assyrian fortresses from the 8th century BC. Were found.

On April 19, 1936, an Arab uprising broke out, including a strike that paralyzed the port of Jaffa and interrupted the export of citrus fruits. Contrary to the wishes of the British authorities, the Jewish government opened the port of Tel Aviv to compete with the port of Jaffa. The chosen location was the mouth of the Yarkon River, near the lighthouse and the lighthouse now served as a navigational aid for the port.

Reading Power Station was built nearby between 1937 and 1938. The lighting of the tall chimney made the lighthouse superfluous, but the lighthouse was still in operation. In 1965, when the port was officially closed and replaced by Ashdod Port , the lighthouse was also decommissioned.

In 2007 the Israel Antiquities Authority rebuilt a wooden walkway around Tell and the lighthouse, making them easier for the public to reach. However, the tower itself is closed, as are all the windows.

Originally the lighthouse was painted in a checkerboard pattern in black and white, traces of this painting can still be seen today.

reception

The lighthouse played a role in some Israeli films, e.g. Late Summer Blues , and was depicted on an Israeli postage stamp that was issued on November 26, 2009.
