The Vuurtoren van Urk is a lighthouse ( Dutch Vuurtoren ) 18.5 m high in the Dutch municipality of Urk . It lies at the highest point in the province of Flevoland . The construction of today's lighthouse began in 1844 and has been operated fully automatically for several years.
As early as 1617, a coal fire was maintained in Urk for orientation for the fishermen of the community and for the ships sailing from Amsterdam in the direction of the North Sea . A square beacon was built in 1837, but it was broken off again in 1844. Instead, the brick lighthouse, which still exists today, was built in its place.
The lighthouse in Urk is the only lighthouse on the IJsselmeer and Markermeer that is operated with a standing lamp and a rotating Fresnel lens .
