The former beacon in Wittdün

The Wittdün lighthouse or Leitfeuer Wittdün was a beacon on the German North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein .

Location and description

The tower is located in the south of the island of Amrum on the beach promenade of the municipality of Wittdün on Amrum in the district of North Frisia .

The approximately 8-10 meter high (different sources) and red-white-red painted tower made of prefabricated metal parts was built in 1977 after the former Kurhaus von Wittdün was demolished in 1974. Up until then, there was a lantern in the attic that served as a guide light. The Wittdün lighthouse was a beacon for the ferry terminal in Wittdün, which was used as a navigation marker for shipping . The tower was only in operation for around ten years, from April 1978 to April 1988, when its fire was "extinguished" again. It had a fire height of 17 meters above the MThw , its nominal range was about 17 nautical miles .

The Wittdün lighthouse is almost identical to the Nebel lighthouse , which is located south of the village of Nebel in the Süddorf district. This has been in operation since 1981 and is remote-controlled by the Federal Waterways and Shipping Office in Tönning .
