Leukoplast

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leukoplast (from ancient Greek λευκός leukós , German 'white' and Latin emplastrum 'association') is a brand name for medical adhesive tape . It is a roll plaster made of viscose fiber fabric (formerly also known as cellulose fabric ), which is coated with zinc oxide - rubber- resin adhesive. Leukoplast has been marketed by Beiersdorf AG since 1921 .

development

Leukoplast was developed in 1901 by the chemist Isaak Lifschütz and the owner of the Beiersdorf company, Oscar Troplowitz . The pharmacologist Troplowitz bought the factory from Paul Carl Beiersdorf in 1890 and, with the support of chemists and dermatologists, developed numerous products, some of which are still known and widely used today. Together with Lifschütz, Troplowitz invented - in addition to Leukoplast - also Nivea .

Initially, it was offered in the form of rolls of 1 m in widths of 1, 2, 3 and 5 cm. Around 1964, the individual widths were then pulled together (1.25 cm, 2.5 cm). The width of 3 cm only existed until 1964 and the width of 5 cm probably only until 1940. A white version with the addition "Hospital" consists of less strongly adhesive, more easily tearable material.

The second type of packaging was (as it is today) reel goods with a length of 5 m in three widths (1.25 cm, 2.5 cm and 5 cm). Tin and plastic cans, cardboard boxes and plastic reels were used as packaging material.

Leukoplast as a proper name belongs to BSN medical GmbH from Hamburg, which has been selling the respective products since 2001 and is currently owned by the hygiene product manufacturer Essity . The product rights also include the packaging color red and the slip ring. Beiersdorf sells the product under the name Hansaplast Classic Fixierpflaster . The coil ring is blue and has no ring.

application

Leukoplast is an adhesive plaster that can be used to attach non-self-adhesive wound dressings , such as a gauze compress . Such Fixing will also be used to bandaging or compression therapy from short-stretch to fix.

Trivia

As an early form of the tissue tape , Leukoplast was also used as a generic name outside of medicine. As it was one of the first products of its kind to be widely used and readily available, it was also used in the household and recommended as a "universal product" for all kinds of handicrafts . The small car Lloyd LP 300 , whose body was made of plywood and synthetic leather, was jokingly called the Leukoplastbomber.
