Leviathan in Canada's Wonderland ( Vaughan , Ontario , Canada ) is a steel roller coaster from the manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard , which opened on May 6, 2012. With it, the manufacturer delivered its first Giga Coaster , i.e. the first roller coaster to exceed a height of 91 meters (300 feet). The 1,672 meter long, 93 meter high and 148 km / h fast system is the highest and fastest roller coaster in Canada. A ride on the 28 million US dollars expensive train takes about 3 minutes and 28 seconds.

history

Speculation

Speculation for a new roller coaster in Canada's Wonderland began in the spring of 2011 when construction work was observed near the Dragon Fire roller coaster and the park's go-kart track. On July 3, 2011, Canada's Wonderland posted a website on their Facebook page with a countdown to August 18 at 7:00 a.m. The page also featured promising quotes from editors of various theme park magazines and the managing director of the Cedar Fair Group to which the park belongs.

Announcement and construction

A train passes the hammerhead turn

After the countdown was over, Leviathan was officially announced on August 18, 2011 at 7:00 a.m. The announcement was also broadcast live on the local breakfast TV.

The construction of the rail began on October 11, 2011. At the end of September, the final brake and the rail sections belonging to the station area were completely installed. On October 18, 2011, the longest and heaviest rail section of the lift hill at 37 meters was installed. The rail construction was completed on February 7, 2012. The first test runs were carried out on March 15th. On April 18, the park announced on its Facebook page that a 30 meter long tunnel was being built at the foot of the First Drop .

Auction of the first seats

On January 19, 2012, Canada's Wonderland started an auction in which the 96 seats of the premiere ride were auctioned off to the highest bidders on April 27. The auction brought a total of 40,000  $ , which were donated to a local children's hospital-based. The highest bid for a seat was $ 1,000. However, the highest bidders had to be content with a trip without the tunnel at the foot of the First Drop, as it was not yet completed at that time.

layout

The lift hill

After the train has left the station, it completes a 180 ° curve to the right and reaches the 93 meter high lift hill. Once at the top, the train is accelerated to its top speed of 148 km / h on the 80-degree inclined First Drop . At the foot of the descent, the train drives through the 30 meter long tunnel and enters a 50 meter high inclined right curve . This is followed by another descent and a left-hand bend close to the ground, which is driven through at 122 km / h. The train then climbs a 56 meter high camelback , which is followed by a 45 meter high hammerhead turn inclined at 115 degrees. These two elements are located in the parking lot and in the entrance area of the park. After leaving the Hammerhead Turn, the train enters the second curve near the ground at 97 km / h. The train then drives up a smaller, 38-meter-high camelback and enters the third high-speed bend that is inclined to the left, whereupon it is decelerated to walking speed by the final brake using eddy currents and drives back to the station.

Trains

One of the three moves of Leviathan .

Leviathan has three fiberglass- made hyper-coaster trains in red, orange and yellow. The first car of each train is decorated with a pair of grim-looking eyes. Each train has eight cars with two rows of seats for two people, which are held in the seats by lap bars.

rail

Leviathan's steel rail is 1672 meters long and at its highest point, the top of the lift hill, reaches a height of 93 meters. It reaches a maximum incline of 80 degrees on the first drop. The rail is colored cyan , the supports are held in a slightly darker blue. The typical Bolliger - & - Mabillard box rail is used as the rail, in which the tubes are connected to the running surfaces via struts with a rectangular, hollow steel body. In contrast to the Giga Coasters of the competitor Intamin ( Millennium Force in Cedar Point and Intimidator 305 in Kings Dominion ), a conventional chain lift with a continuous chain was used on Leviathan instead of a cable lift .
