history

From 1712 to 1846 the site belonged to the Camlotten-und Drogetten-Fabrique , a manufacture of Johann Heinrich Grätzel. After its bankruptcy, the site was taken over by Albert Hermann Levin, who already ran a wool factory in Rosdorf . In order to operate the mechanical looms, the Grone was dammed in 1873 and a larger pond was created.

Around 1880, the factory owner's son had a garden built around the pond, which was also intended to serve as a break area for the workers. A small bathhouse was also set up by the pond in 1897 (Levinstrasse 8; used as a restaurant in 2017). The factory closed in 1929.

From 1934 an airfield was set up west of Göttingen, and the park area was also used by the military. Most of the park was used by the Air Force Office staff as a recreation and leisure area.

After the Second World War, the airfield was closed and the park was converted into an urban green area in 1959. Levinsche Park has been owned by the city of Göttingen since 1961. In 1978 a large playground was created.

Levinsche Park has been a listed building since 1982 ; together with two manufacturers' villas and former buildings of the Levinsche spinning mill, it forms a protected group of structures .

description

The park is traversed on its west side by the Grone, which is dammed about halfway through the park; The Flötegraben (partially piped in the industrial area) flows into the stream below the weir . Some of the water is diverted and flows into the large pond with an island in the middle. Gray herons nest on this and on old trees on the southern edge of the pond. Sturgeons live in the pond and were used by anglers in 2005. However, there is no increase. The large pond has two drains, one into the Grone below the weir and the other into the small pond at the north end of the park. There is a playground in the southeast corner. At the north-western entrance to the park is a ginkgo that has been designated a natural monument .
