Lev Petrovich Pitayevsky

Lev Petrovich Pitajewski ( Russian Лев Петрович Питаевский ; English transcription: Lev Pitaevskii ; born January 18, 1933 in Saratow ) is a Russian physicist.

Pitajewski studied until his diploma at the University of Saratov and was a student of Lev Landau from 1955 to 1962 at the Institute for Physical Problems of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, where he received his doctorate in 1958. In 1964 he completed his habilitation there (Russian doctorate). He stayed at the Institute for Physical Problems (later the Kapiza Institute ).

He is currently a professor at the University of Trento at the Center for Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC). From 1994 to 1998 he was visiting professor at the Technion in Haifa , where he also received an honorary doctorate.

Pitajewski works with quantum gases and especially BEC. In 1961 he introduced the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which is important in this context (independent of EP Gross). In addition, he deals with the theory of elasticity , among other things .

He has been a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1976 and a full member since 1990 . In 1980 he received the Landau Prize of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and in 2008 the Landau Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 1998 he has been an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . In 1994 he received the Alexander von Humboldt Prize and in 1997 the Feenberg Memorial Award for many-particle physics , in 2018 the Pomerantschuk Prize and the Premio Enrico Fermi .
