Leyla Onur

Leyla Onur , née Akdağ (born January 8, 1945 in Braunschweig ) is a German politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). She was the first German MP of Turkish descent in the German Bundestag and the European Parliament .

Life

Onur is the daughter of a Turkish engineer and a German seamstress who came to Germany in 1937 to study mechanical engineering. She grew up in Braunschweig and graduated from high school there in 1965. She then completed an apprenticeship as a tailor and studied German and social studies. From 1971 to 1989 she worked as a teacher at grammar schools and vocational schools in Braunschweig. In 1973 Onur joined the SPD. After performing various party functions, being involved in the city ​​council and as second mayor , she finally became chairwoman of the SPD sub-district of Braunschweig in 1991. From 1989 to 1994 she was the first German MP of Turkish origin in the European Parliament. From 1994 to 2002 she was a member of the German Bundestag.

Onur is married and has two children.
