The Liboriusblatt is a Catholic weekly magazine published in Hamm (North Rhine-Westphalia) from the publisher Liboriusblatt GmbH & Co. KG . It has a tradition going back more than a century. The publisher and managing partner is Rudolf Thiemann , editor-in-chief Andrea Groß-Schulte, and publishing director Manfred Schmitz. The magazine is named after the late antique Saint Liborius , the patron of the Archdiocese of Paderborn , to which the city of Hamm belongs.

history

Since 1884 the "Hammer Sunday paper" with the subtitle "Liboriusblatt" appeared as a Saturday supplement of the "Hammer Volkszeitung". The newspaper should represent Catholic positions in the Kulturkampf . On March 13, 1899, the Liboriusblatt became an independent Catholic family magazine. Paper shortages during World War I and the economic crisis led to a slump, from which the paper only recovered in the 1920s under editor-in-chief Hermann Josef Berges. It reached a circulation of more than 100,000 copies. During the time of National Socialism , editor-in-chief Berges was forced to resign in 1936. The name had to be changed to "Familienbote"; Catholic subjects were banned. In autumn 1944, the publication was discontinued after the printing house in Hamm was destroyed by bombing. The first post-war edition, again under the name "Liboriusblatt", appeared on May 15, 1949. On the occasion of the centenary of the Liboriusblatt, Pope John Paul II (1920–2005) received 320 readers of the paper on March 13, 1999 in a private audience in the Vatican, Members of the editorial team and the publishing house. He paid tribute to the magazine and its makers with the words: It was not always easy for you to maintain and sharpen the Catholic profile of your magazine. You have occupied an important place in the press landscape in Germany in the 20th century.
