As a light shaft in is Building an open top or translucent Covered, shaft-like part of the building, respectively. It is used to illuminate windows that are located in the shaft walls or rooms that open to the shaft and to supply fresh air .

Basement light shaft

A basement light shaft is a necessary component in front of a basement window that is below the surrounding terrain. The shaft enables daylight to enter and an exchange of air in the basement. The light shaft usually consists of a prefabricated part made of concrete, reinforced concrete or glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP). The light shaft is usually provided with a drainage system to remove rainwater, for example . The side walls of the shaft are often kept bright for a higher light output. Basement light shafts are usually covered with a steel grating that can be walked on or with a sturdy glass plate.

Basement light shafts, which also serve as escape routes , have a correspondingly larger construction. Basement light wells that are used in potential flood areas must be made flood-proof.
