Eyelid rings for flat wedge locks

Liderung is a type of seal, especially on pistons of hydraulic machines and for sealing the breeches of guns .

Originally, such seals were made of leather and were used in mining to seal pumps. The word lidern is a subsidiary form of leather, turning something into leather .

Today , only metal eyelid rings are used in guns that use loose bag propellants . These are inserted into a corresponding recess in the breech block or into an annular groove on the bottom ring of the gun barrel. The pressure of the powder gases pushes the eyelid ring apart and seals the powder chamber from the outside.

The term also describes the behavior of a cartridge case in the chamber of a firearm . Under the pressure of the burning propellant powder when the shot is fired, the material of the cartridge case nestles against the wall of the cartridge chamber and thus ensures a gas-tight closure of the gun barrel at the rear end.
