Church of Our Lady Heddesdorf

The Catholic parish church Liebfrauen in Heddesdorf in Rhineland-Palatinate was built in 1957/58. Since September 1, 2007, it has belonged to the parish of St. Matthias in the Rhein-Wied deanery of the Trier diocese .

history

Since the Counts of Wied were reformed in 1556, Heddesdorf was a purely Protestant community. Since the ruling family pursued a policy of religious tolerance, Catholics settled in Heddesdorf again in the following centuries. When their number increased again at the beginning of the 20th century, these were looked after by the parish of St. Matthias . However, the number of believers rose again in the 1950s to over 2000 and it was decided to found a Catholic community. In 1957, the foundation stone for a new church was laid in the Ascension in 1958, the first Mass was celebrated. On September 28, 1958, Bishop Matthias Wehr consecrated the church under the new name Maria Königin. In 1961 the parish vicarie was raised to its own parish until it merged in 2007 with Heilig Kreuz (Neuwied) and St. Matthias (Neuwied) to form the new parish of St. Matthias.
