Map with all coordinates: Lieråsen tunnel is a railway tunnel in Norway . It lies in the course of the Drammenbane between Oslo and Drammen , more precisely between the Asker train station and the Lier stop in Viken . The tunnel is 10,723 meters long.
history
The tunnel construction lasted from 1963 to 1971, it was opened to traffic in 1973. It was Norway's longest railway tunnel until the Romeriksporten tunnel opened in 1999.
The tunnel considerably shortened the travel time on the railway line between Oslo and Drammen because the line is now double-tracked in this area. The single-track line ran in a large curve around Spikkestad in Røyken and Lierbyen in the municipality of Lier. Since the tunnel was opened, the railway line between Asker and Spikkestad has only been used for local traffic. The section between Spikkestad and Drammen has been closed and now runs as a cycle path between Brakerøya and Lierbyen via Reistad to Gullaugkleiva . Another cycle path is planned for 2012 to get from Gullaugkleiva on the old route to Spikkestad.
The tunnel was planned to be in operation for 30 years. There should be no major repairs during this period. Due to uncontrolled water ingress in the unlit tunnel, renovation work had to be started after 20 years , as the concrete sleepers began to crumble, which led to broken rails. There were also problems with falling boulders that were caught with attached nets.
