Lieselotte Templeton

Lieselotte Templeton , b. Kamm, (born August 4, 1918 in Breslau , † October 10, 2009 in Berkeley , California ) was a German-born American crystallographer. In 1987 she and her husband David H. Templeton received the Patterson Award from the American Crystallographic Association.

Life

Templeton was the daughter of Berta Kamm (née Stern) and Walter Kamm and she was the niece of the physicist Otto Stern and the botanist Kurt Stern. She grew up in Germany, fled to France in 1933 and emigrated to the USA in 1936. She received her bachelor's degree in 1946 and her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley . Glenn T. Seaborg was a member of the thesis qualification examination committee. Her doctoral thesis, which she wrote under the supervision of Leo Brewer , was entitled: "The heats of formation of CN, N 2 and NO". She was briefly employed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and later worked as a research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1948 she was married to David H. Templeton . She had two children with him. Due to anti-nepotism rules, she was sometimes not allowed to work in the same department as her husband.

research

After completing her PhD, she worked on solid state chemistry, ceramics and explosives detection. Her research in crystallography began with her work on the Analytical Absorption Program (AGNOST), later also referred to as ABSOR. This program helped to solve different crystal structures of compounds with heavy elements and was also important for her investigations on the anomalous dispersion of synchrotron radiation at absorption edges, which she carried out together with David H. Templeton . This led to the development of a technique using anomalous diffraction of many wavelengths. This is now a standard method for protein structure analysis.

Together with David H. Templeton, she used the polarized nature of synchrotron radiation to show X-ray dichroism in anisotropic molecules and to measure polarized anomalous scattering in diffraction experiments for the first time.
