League of Peja

The League of Peja ( Albanian  Lidhja e Pejës ) was an association of Kosovar Albanian nationalist intellectuals, politicians and Islamic clergy in Peja in Vilayet Kosovo . It took place in January 1889 and was accompanied by over 400 delegates. The league was chaired by Haxhi Mulla Zeka . The dissolution took place in May 1900.

The league came into being after numerous revolts broke out in Kosovo in 1885 against the taxes imposed and the registration of the population. She saw herself as the successor to the League of Prizren , which was founded in 1878 and forcibly dissolved by the Ottoman government in 1881.

The League of Peja was a resistance and autonomy movement of the Albanian population of the Ottoman Empire . The two main currents of the league were the moderate and the radical supporters. The former demanded above all cultural reforms from the Sublime Porte ; The latter relied on the implementation of political reforms, which would pave the way to real autonomy for the Albanian settlement areas within the empire. However, the main objective of the gathering was to defend the Muslim faith.
