Liina Tõnisson

Liina Tõnisson (born May 24, 1940 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician.

Life and politics

Liina Tõnisson graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1959. She then studied until 1964 at the Tallinn Polytechnic Institute ( Tallinna Polütehniline Instituut ) to become an economist in mechanical engineering . From 1964 to 1981 she worked in socialist production. From 1981 to 1989 Tõnisson worked in the field of economic analysis.

With the end of communist rule in Estonia, she went into politics. Between 1986 and 1988 Tõnisson played a significant role in the transition from a socialist planned economy to a market economy .

From 1989 to 1991 Tõnisson was the head of the corporate department in the Estonian Ministry of Economy. In 1992 she was elected as a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). Until October 2007 she was a member of parliament. Tõnisson belonged to the Estonian Center Party ( Eesti Keskerakond ) from 1994 to 2004 . She then joined the Estonian Social Democrats .

From April to November 1995, Liina Tõnisson was Minister of Economic Affairs in Prime Minister Tiit Vähi's cabinet . From January 2002 to April 2003 she was Minister for Economy and Infrastructure in the cabinet of Prime Minister Siim Kallas .

On November 20, 2007, Liina Tõnisson was elected chairman of the board of the Estonian state lottery company Eesti Loto .

Private life

Liina Tõnisson has been widowed since 1997. She has two sons.
