Johann of Brandenburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann von Brandenburg (* around 1263; † September 20 or 21, 1292 in Eisenach ) was Bishop of Havelberg (1290–92).

Life

Johann von Brandenburg was a son of Margrave Johann II of Brandenburg and his wife Hedwig von Werle . In 1290 he was nominated bishop "via compromissi" by the provost and two canons of the Havelberg chapter. Pope Nicholas IV. Rejected this on 5 December 1290 for lack of age (younger than 30 years) and providierte instead of Johann whose uncle Hermann von Brandenburg , son of the Marquis John I , half-brother of the Archbishop Erich von Brandenburg , the youngest son of the Marquis of his first marriage to Sophia of Denmark.

When Hermann died before the consecration in mid-August 1291, the margravial family presented Johann again. He was presumably consecrated on October 9, 1291 by his uncle, Archbishop Erich von Brandenburg. Johann belonged to the circle of the Saxon church princes standing against the Duke of Braunschweig . His tomb is in the cathedral of Havelberg .
