Liliam Kechichián (born March 2, 1952 in Montevideo ) is a Uruguayan politician .

Life

Liliam Kechichián is of Armenian descent and taught as a lecturer in the Department of Tourism at the Instituto de Capacitación en Turismo . From 1990 to 1995, the co-founder of the Frente Amplio held a mandate as Edil in Montevideo. From 2000 to 2005 she was Director of Tourism and Leisure at the Intendencia of Montevideo . In 2004 she was elected to the Cámara de Representantes and took over the chairmanship of the tourism commission. She was also president of the Corporación Turística . In 2006, during the reign of President Tabaré Vázquez, she became State Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Sport and subsequently held this position under the presidency of José Mujica . In that year she was also named "Woman of the Year 2006 in Tourism" ("La Mujer del Año 2006 en Turismo"). In 2011 she received this honor a second time. On May 31, 2012, she took over the office of Minister of Tourism and Sports as the successor to Héctor Lescano .
