The magazine publishes investigative reports, reports on contemporary and historical topics, entertainment industry criticism and reviews, literary prose and poetry, art and photography. Some contributions have been awarded prizes.

history

The magazine was founded in 1976 by Susan Weidman Schneider. The aim was to promote the discussion of topics among Jewish women and to put them on the agenda of the Jewish community, whereby the aim was to give the Jewish women more freedom of choice in everyday Jewish life. The magazine is called Lilith after the supposedly first wife of Adam . Though not mentioned in the Bible, Talmudic scholars later wrote that Lilith was banished from the Garden of Eden for refusing to submit to Adam. Lilith is seen as an important factor in the spread and acceptance of women's rights in Judaism.

content

The wide range of topics includes sexual misconduct by rabbis, new rituals and celebrations up to the deconstruction of the JAP cliché (“ Jewish American Princess ”) and the representation of the Jewish point of view on the right to abortion .

For example, Cynthia Ozick's article “Notes toward Finding the Right Question: A Vindication of the Rights of Jewish Women” moved the question of women's rights in Judaism from the sacred to the social domain. In so doing, she opened the issue for many who had considered the question in exclusively theological terms. "
