from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lilly Helene Steinschneider-Wenckheim (born January 13, 1891 in Budapest , † March 28, 1975 in Nice ) was a Hungarian pilot .

As the second woman from Austria-Hungary , she obtained her pilot's license from Karl Illner in Wiener Neustadt in August 1912 . Before her there was only the Bohemian aviator Božena Laglerová . In Hungary she received the pilot's license number four.

Steinschneider-Wenckheim flew an Etrich pigeon . Before that, she was only “ballast” in performance flights , for example with Joseph Sablatnig on a long-distance flight and with Hans Vollmöller in a continuous flight, since at that time passengers were required in some disciplines.

She caused a stir as a woman at the flight meeting in 1913 at Aspern airfield . The French Mme. Palliers also took part for the first time alongside her.

She was married to Johann Graf Coudenhove-Kalergi . After her marriage, she stopped flying and lived with her husband for some time in Ronsperg Castle in Bohemia (Czech Republic) before moving to southern France.

In her honor, the Lilly Steinschneider Gasse in Wiener Neustadt named. The writer Bernhard Setzwein describes her and her marriage to Johann Graf Coudenhove-Kalergi in his 2017 novel The Bohemian Samurai .
