Lim Goh Tong ( 1918 - October 23, 2007 ) was a Malaysian entrepreneur .

Life

Lim was born in 1918 in the Anxi region of China, the youngest of five children. When his father died in 1934, Lim and his older brother had to take on the role of breadwinner and leave school. Lim left China in February 1937 and emigrated to Malaysia to work in his uncle's carpentry workshop. After two years he became a construction subcontractor and built a school. In 1940 he briefly returned to his family in China, but had to flee from the war with Japan .

Lim founded the Genting Group and built the resort of World Genting in the Genting Highlands in Malaysia with hotel complexes and an amusement park. According to Forbes Magazine , Goh Tong was one of the richest Malaysians. He was married and had six children.

Awards

Lim Goh Tong received several awards including:

  • Malaysian Entrepreneurs Award 1985
  • Manager of the Year Award 1986
  • Business Achiever of the Year Award 1994
  • In 1999 his company was number 1 in the ranking of the 10 largest Malaysian companies
  • Best Employer Award 1996

He was also awarded the honorary title " Tan Sri " by the government of Malaysia in June 1979 in recognition of his services to the country.
