Lim Jock Hoi (born December 5, 1951 ) is a diplomat from Brunei and current Secretary General of ASEAN .

Career

Lim Jock Hoi received a bachelor's degree in economics from the City of London Polytechnic (now London Metropolitan University ) in 1976 and post-graduate in 1977 with a certificate of teaching.

In the same year, Lim Jock Hoi entered the civil service as a civil servant in the teaching post in Brunei and worked from 1981 to 1985 as the director of a secondary school . From February 2001 to July 2005, he was appointed Director General for International Relations and Trade Development in the Brunei Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources. In September 2005, Lim Jock Hoi was appointed Deputy Permanent Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Since 2006, Lim Jock Hoi has held the position of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Brunei. During his tenure, he served as Senior Official in Brunei at the ASEAN Economic Community Pillar (SEOM), the Asia-Pacific Economic Community (APEC) and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Lim Jock Hoi has been a member of the High Level Task Force at ASEAN Economic Integration (HLTF-EI) since 2011 and served as chairman of the HLTF-EI from 2017. Lim Jock Hoi was the chief negotiator of his country for the planned trade agreements the Transpacific Partnership (Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement TPP) and also for the Pacific-4 (P4 Agreement) , the forerunner of the TPP negotiations. Lim Jock Hoi was previously also Vice-Chairman in the negotiations on the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA), which was created in 2009. Lim Jock Hoi was also Brunei's chief negotiator for the Brunei Darussalam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (BJEPA).

From June 2011 to 2017, Lim Hock Hoi was the chairman of the board of directors of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia ERIA. He was also a member of the external advisory board for the ASEN 2030 study , which was carried out by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

On January 1, 2018, Lim Jock Hoi took over the office of Secretary General of ASEAN.

Lim Jock Hoi is married and has two sons.

Honors

In 2007 Lim was awarded the Most Honorable Order of Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei, Second Class (DPMB) ( Malay Darjah Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei Yang Amat Mulia ). Because of this, he has the honorary title Dato Paduka , which is also the formal salutation for Lim.
