Limax conemenosi genital apparatus (vd = vas deferens, cp = blind sac of the penis, rp = retractor muscle of the penis) (from Simroth, 1891: plate 1, fig. 8)

Limax conemenosi is a slug -Art from the family of the slug (Limacidae) that the terrestrial snails belongs (gastropod).

features

Limax conemenosi is stretched out 10 to 12 cm long in the adult stage (up to 8 cm in preserved specimens). The keel is comparatively very short and not very clearly formed. The coat is also comparatively short; it takes only about ¼ of the body length. Between the midline and the breathing hole are 21 to 23 fine, flattened wrinkles. The color varies from dirty cream to yellowish gray to reddish gray. The sides are often a little lighter. The mantle shield is regularly marked with numerous, about 1 mm large black, sharply delimited spots, which are often outlined in light. The coat shield is also finely granulated, the back with coarse, longitudinal wrinkles. The whitish sole of the foot has three fields, and the edge of the sole is whitish. The slime is colorless.

In the genital system, the penis is about half the length of the body. The penile retractor muscle inserts about two thirds of the penis length (calculated from the base). The spermatic duct opens laterally near the apical end into the penis. The apex thus forms a blind end. There is no appendix in the digestive tract.

Similar species

In comparison to Limax cephalonicus, Limax conemenosi has a significantly longer penis. The retractor muscle starts at about two thirds of the length of the penis, compared to about half the length of the penis in L. cephalonicus .

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The distribution area extends from Serbia , Macedonia , Bulgaria and southern Albania over almost all of Greece , in the south including the Peloponnese , but not to the Greek islands. In Bulgaria the species was found up to an altitude of 1300 m.

The animals live in forests and bushland, also spread synanthropically in the cultivated area, usually on walls and stones. The species does not seem to crawl up trees like other Limax species do.

Taxonomy

The species was first described by Oskar Boettger in 1882 . The type locality is Preveza (Greece). Limax (Heynemannia) Conemenosi var. Multipunctata Boettger, 1885 Limax pestaniensis Rähle 1977 are seen by Wiktor (2001) as younger synonyms.
