history

The history of the Schwerin housing association begins on September 2nd, 1957 with the establishment of the AWG workers' housing association " Fritz Heckert ". The first apartment blocks of the AWG are completed and occupied in today's Weststadt with many assembly hours for the members.

With the construction of the industrial complex in Schwerin Süd, the demand for housing in Schwerin rose by leaps and bounds, so that in 1971 the foundation stone was laid for the first construction phase of the new Grosser Dreesch residential area , a new district planned for 60,000 residents. The first houses for the AWG "Fritz Heckert" were built in 1973 in what is now Martin-Luther-King-Strasse and Arno-Esch-Strasse. In 1974 the cooperative built its administration building at Leonhard-Frank-Straße 35.

As early as the spring of 1978, the 5,000th apartment of the AWG "Fritz Heckert" was ceremoniously handed over. In May of the same year the III. Construction phase of the Great Dreesch, today's Mueßer Holz.

The 1980s were mainly characterized by mergers with other cooperatives. In 1980 the AWG "Reichsbahn-Post" was added. In 1982 and 1986 the non-profit housing cooperatives "Jean Sibelius" and "Robert Beltz" were taken over, to which SWG owes its restored old buildings today. On the 25th anniversary in 1982, AWG "Fritz Heckert" was able to hand over its 9,000th apartment. In the 30th year of its existence, the AWG "Fritz Heckert" had over 11,000 apartments and almost 12,000 members. This made it one of the largest workers' housing associations in the GDR.

The turning point and peaceful revolution in the GDR changed the structure and working methods of the cooperative. On September 25, 1990, the representatives' meeting decided to change the statute and name. With the entry in the cooperative register under no. 7, the Schweriner Housing Cooperative eG (SWG) was created on October 1, 1990. Since then, the elected representatives have had a great deal of responsibility and make direct decisions, thereby determining the development of the cooperative.

In 1992, more than 30 million DM went into the repair and modernization of the cooperative housing stock. The following years were characterized by rapid and complex growth with the new requirements. After the board of directors had applied for old debt aid in 1993 and as a result 15 percent of the housing stock was privatized , the SWG invested a peak of 83.5 million DM in the stock in 1994.

At the end of the 1990s, the letting situation deteriorated noticeably for the first time; the vacancy rate rose. In order to counteract this trend and to make contact with the SWG easier for those looking for accommodation, regular housing exchanges were held from 1998 onwards and an Internet presence with the latest available apartments was set up.

In 1998, the non-profit association “Hand in Hand eV” was founded and with it the expansion of the social commitment of the SWG.

In November 1998, the cooperative's first new building since the fall of the Wall - 64 apartments suitable for the elderly and a neighborhood meeting place - was ready for occupancy. At the same time, the Social Management department was set up to improve coordination and expand SWG's social commitment. In order to counter the difficult rental situation and also to attract young cooperative members, the “Young Living” project was launched with the strong involvement of our own team of apprentices ; it is still in great demand today.

After the cooperative changed its concept in the late 1990s and switched to complex modernization including many individual floor plan changes, a new era began with the urban redevelopment east in 2003 in Neu Zippendorf . Above all, the sustained decline in population made demolition and conversion plans inevitable.

According to its corporate concept, the cooperative had taken over 1200 apartments off the market by the end of 2010. The urban redevelopment was and is not only necessary for SWG, it is also a great opportunity and led to a leap in quality in the conversion and modernization.

In recent years, for example, a residential area has emerged in the Tallinner / Vidiner Strasse model quarter. Former prefabricated buildings became urban villas.

At the moment, the further renovation in the residential area "An den Seeterrassen" and in the Wuppertaler Straße is being continued.
