Limax hemmeni is a slug -type from the family of the slug (Limacidae) in the subordination of the terrestrial gastropods (Stylommatophora). The species was named after its discoverer, Jens Hemmen (Wiesbaden).

features

The animals are stretched out and preserved in alcohol up to 77 mm long. The coat takes up 29 mm of this, well over a third of the total body length. It is drawn out triangular to the rear end, and not rounded. The breathing hole is 29 mm from the front edge of the mantle, so it is well behind the middle of the mantle. The keel is comparatively short and limited to the rearmost part of the body. The coat and back of the animals are colored ash gray and covered with irregularly distributed and unevenly large, sharply drawn, yellow spots. The sole of the foot is uniformly light colored.

The genital apparatus is located in the front half of the body. The brownish hermaphrodite is located roughly in the middle of the body; H. at the rear end of the genital apparatus between the first two intestinal loops. The hermaphrodite is small and round to oval in shape. The hermaphroditic duct (spermoviduct) is of medium length, winding and thickened at the end. The protein gland, which is also brown in color, is tongue-shaped. The prostate, attached to it, extends the entire length of the spermoviduct. The free fallopian tube (oviduct) is relatively short and bulging. The spermathec is spherical and sits on a comparatively long stem. The atrium is short, the penis comparatively short and tortuous. It reaches about 3/7 of the body length. The upper, constricted end or appendix is pulled out like a hook. The appendix and penis proper are connected by muscle fibers and connective tissue. The spermatic duct opens into the penis almost at the apical end in the area of the appendix. The retractor divides into several muscle cords; one strand starts at the constricted appendix, the remaining strands before the constriction.

Similar species

Limax hemmeni can only be compared with Limax dobrogicus Grossu & Lupu, 1960 , due to the peculiar penile formation (angled appendix is properly connected to the penis by muscle fibers and connective tissue) . L. hemmeni has a longer penis and a triangular sheath that ends at the back.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is endemic to the island of Samos (Greece). It was found there on a south-east sloping slope of an overgrown olive grove under large stone slabs. Nothing else is known about the way of life.

Taxonomy

The taxon was first described in 1983 by Wolfgang Rähle (1939–2019). The species is poorly known; in particular, no data are available on lifestyle and reproduction.
