Limax lachensis is a species of nudibranch from the family of snails (Limacidae), which belongs to the land snails (Stylommatophora). The species is endemic to a small area ( Département Var ) in south-eastern France.

features

Limax lachensis is stretched out 120 to 150 mm long and 15 to 20 mm wide. The body is elongated and pointed at the back. The animals are reddish on the back and turn light yellow on the sides. The back is decorated with black dots, which are elongated and form a median line and two lateral lines. The front end of the mantle shield is rounded, the rear end pointed in a wedge shape. It is ornamented with fine black, rounded points and fine concentric striae. The sole of the foot is uniformly whitish-yellow in color, the edges are red-orange. The dorsal keel is weakly developed and slightly tortuous. The body mucus is colored red-orange, the mucus on the soles of the feet is colorless.

The calcified shell plate in the mantle is 12 mm long, 7.5 mm wide and rounded triangular. It is slightly convex on the upper side, slightly concave on the underside and shows clear concentric growth stripes. The nucleus is in the back. The surface is brightly shiny, the edges translucent.

The spermathec is pear-shaped with a very short stem. The penis is long, thick, and curved. The spermatic duct is a little twisted.

Similar species

L. lachensis differs from the tiger snail ( Limax maximus ) in color and pattern ; common is the uniformly light sole of the foot. In contrast, the genital apparatus and the lime bowl match well with the Black Schnegel ( Limax cinereoniger ). However, this has a three-part sole with a light middle field and dark side fields as well as a different basic color and pattern. The orange-red seams on the soles of the feet are very characteristic of L. lachensis .

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

Limax lachensis has so far only been found in the coniferous forests of the subalpine region of the Montagne de Lachens at an altitude of 1,300 to 1,600 m and near Bagnols-en-Forêt (foothills of the Esterel Mountains ) in the Var department (southern France). Nothing is known about nutrition, copulation and reproduction.

Taxonomy

The species was first described by Paul Bérenguier in 1902. The species is little known so far, only Louis Germain has published some additional results since then.

The species is presumably named after the Montagne Lachens and therefore formed incorrectly according to the International Rules for Zoological Nomenclature and should be lachens-ensis. However, since Paul Bérenguier does not give an explicit Derivatio nominis (name origin), the name may not be improved according to the nomenclature rules.
