The Limburgs Symfonie Orkest was a symphony orchestra based in Maastricht , the Netherlands .
history
The orchestra was founded in 1883 as Maastrichts Stedelijk Okest (MSO). The first conductor until 1916 was the composer and director of the Maastricht Conservatory Otto Wolf . The first concert took place on September 2nd, 1883 in the city park of Maastricht. In the 20s of the twentieth century concerts began to be given outside of Maastricht. From 1949 to 1980 André Rieu was sr. Chief conductor. During his leadership in 1955, the municipal MSO became an independent foundation , the Limburgs Symfonie Orkest . Since then, the orchestra has been well known under the acronym LSO . For almost ten years, the LSO provided orchestral accompaniment for the also from André Rieu, sen. directed Cappella Aquensis from Aachen , with which the LSO performed numerous masses and motets by the old masters as well as newer church music in Aachen, Maastricht, Heerlen, Cologne and Paris.
The LSO is also known because the violinist André Rieu played there for years.
The orchestra today
Ed Spanjaard was the chief conductor from 2001 to 2012. About 80 musicians belonged to the orchestra. Fixed venues are Maastricht (Theater an het Vrijdhof), Heerlen and Sittard .
The Vriendenvereniging (Friends Association - Support Association) was with almost 4,000 members the second largest in the entire Netherlands after that of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam .
After state subsidies were no longer available, the orchestra merged with Het Brabants Orkest in April 2013 ; together they form the Philharmonie Südniederlande .
