LimeSurvey (formerly PHPSurveyor ) is a free online survey application that makes it possible to develop and publish online surveys without any programming knowledge and to record their results in a database. It is in PHP written and is based on a MySQL - PostgreSQL - or MSSQL - database on. The software is currently available in a variety of languages and dialects.

features

By using a web template system, the layout and design of surveys can be adapted to user requirements. Surveys can either be publicly available or made individually accessible for each participant by means of a "only once" token.

Some web hosts offer LimeSurvey hosting, either as a separate installation or through a control panel, such as cPanel with Fantastico , Plesk and Virtualmin Professionell. Integration modules are also available for various content management systems , including Joomla (although there is no port for the current Joomla version 2.5), Drupal and WordPress .

In an evaluation of free software for conducting online surveys compiled by GESIS , LimeSurvey is the only open source software for surveys that is actively being developed.

history

LimeSurvey was originally registered as a SourceForge.net project under the name PHPSurveyor on February 20, 2003 and was developed by Australian software developer Jason Cleeland. The first release, version 0.93, was released on March 6, 2003. The project quickly gained wide publicity through the development of advanced features.

In 2006 the project management was taken over by Carsten Schmitz and on May 17, 2007 the name was changed from PHPSurveyor to LimeSurvey. The reason for this is the simplification of software licensing. The letters PHP in the name conflicted with the PHP license used by many open source development libraries.

On November 29, 2007, LimeSurvey won first prize in the Les Trophées du Libre competition in the “Corporate Management” category.

In October 2011, the first alpha version of LimeSurvey 2.0 was released, which was withdrawn immediately due to license problems with the newly selected PHP framework CodeIgniter . The Yii framework was supposed to replace CodeIgniter and thus an MVC approach was introduced in LimeSurveys source code. The 9th release candidate was published on August 16, 2012, followed by the stable version on October 15, 2012.

With version 2.05+, which was released in February 2014, it was possible for the first time to program plug-ins that are based on LimeSurvey's own plug-in framework. This allows users to integrate their own plug-ins close to the program without having to adapt the core files of the software.

Version 2.50+ was released in February 2016, with a newly developed bootstrap-based interface and further restructuring based on the Yii framework.

Version 3.0.0 was released in January 2018. Starting with this version, LimeSurvey will be developed with semantic versioning . There are many new functions included, including the design templates are now based on Twig . Simple settings on the design can be adjusted using options.
