Limnophila schranki is a mosquito from the family of the waders (Limoniidae).

features

The mosquito reaches a body length of 12 to 14 millimeters. The relatively narrow wings usually have several dark spots, whereby the pattern varies. The shape of the head and the color of the anterior femora are characteristic of the species . The apical half of the femora is colored black. At the transition to the basal half the color changes to yellow. The ninth tergite is elongated and has a V-shaped pit halfway along its length.

distribution

Limnophila schranki occurs in large parts of Europe. It is also found in Great Britain and Scandinavia. In the east the distribution area extends over Asia Minor and the Caucasus (Georgia) to Central Asia (Kazakhstan).

Way of life

The mosquito species can be found in damp forests, especially on the banks of streams. The mosquitoes usually fly from April to May.

Similar species

  • Limnophila arnoudi - The ninth tergite is less elongated. The eighth sternite is rounded at the top.
