Lindøya is a small island in the inner Oslo Fjord , about 3 km from the city center. It is about 41 hectares and has been built with almost 300 summer houses since the 1920s . In the north-east of the island there is an approximately 10 hectare nature reserve, the “Lindøya Nature Reserve” , in which numerous protected and rare plant species have been preserved.
The island, which is completely closed to private motorized traffic, is connected to Oslo city center via a ferry .
In the summer of 1920, preparations were made on the island to build a dock for seaplanes . The then airline Norsk Luftfartrederi , a forerunner of Det Norske Luftfartselskap , ran its first scheduled flights to Stavanger , Haugesund and Bergen in the same year . However, flight operations were stopped here after only four months and relocated to the neighboring island of Gressholmen , where the first Norwegian water airport was opened a little later.
