Architecture and history

The two-storey half - timbered house was built around 1700. The ground floor is a massive construction. The windows are arranged asymmetrically. Both the fillers and the threshold are profiled, the beam heads rounded. The building is covered by a half-hip roof . The house was rebuilt in the 19th century. At the beginning of the 21st century the house was plastered.

On March 29, 1997, the Harz clock factory inaugurated a cuckoo clock integrated into the northeast facade. The clock has a height of 14.50 meters and a width of 7 meters, the diameter of the dial is 2.20. From 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., a large bird comes out of its door every 15 minutes. The aim was to register the clock as the largest cuckoo clock in the world in the Guinness Book of Records . In return, the cuckoo clock in Triberg in the Black Forest should be exceeded in size. Their size was given as 14 meters. After the clock was completed in Gernrode, it turned out that the Triberg clock actually measures 15.30 meters, which means that the record attempt in Gernrode had failed. Since then, the clock has been advertised as the largest cuckoo clock in the world outside of the Black Forest. A plaque near the clock explains the story.

On October 6, 2007, the cuckoo clock was given the name Harzmichel for its 10th anniversary .
