Line replaceable unit

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Line-Replaceable-Unit (LRU) is a component or an assembly of a technical device that can be exchanged as part of maintenance or repairs on site (i.e. not in a workshop or in a repair shop). Most of these LRUs are connected to the higher-level system or a bus system via plug contacts and can be removed in a few simple steps and usually without special tools. In some devices, replacement is also possible without switching off the device beforehand or putting it into maintenance mode. These LRUs are then referred to as hot-pluggable LRUs.

LRUs are defined by the manufacturer in technical regulations and operating instructions and provided with a special part identification (for example in the military with a National Stock Number , the so-called supply number), which enables easier requirements on the supply route. LRUs can only be completely replaced by the user or operator.

As a rule, component changes within an LRU are reserved for the responsible manufacturer or specially qualified authorized repair facilities. Notwithstanding this, in some areas LRUs can be further subdivided into so-called LLRUs (from English: lower-LRU ). For their replacement, a higher qualification of the maintenance staff and usually also special tools are required, which are often only available in special repair units or which travel from large equipment to large equipment with mobile workshop equipment.

The LRU system has the advantage for more complex large devices such as radar devices for air defense and in avionics that spare parts from different manufacturers can be used. With the help of built-in test equipment, some devices are able to reconfigure the LRUs according to internal requirements, regardless of the respective installation location, i.e. to switch them electrically to a completely different system section with a different task.
