Linus Yale

Linus Yale Jr. (* April 4, 1821 in Salisbury , Herkimer County ; † December 25, 1868 ) was an American inventor and became known for the invention of the cylinder lock.

Yale opened a lock shop in Shelburne Falls, Franklin County, Massachusetts in the early 1840s . In 1861 he patented a cylinder lock for doors and in 1865 an improved version. This was one of the safest door locks, the base of which is still needed today. For the first time, Yale separated the bolt construction from the locking system for the cylinder lock. Back then, these locks were the first to be mass- produced. In 1868 he and Henry Robinson Towne founded Yale Lock Manufacturing Co. in Stamford (Connecticut) . Stamford is therefore also known as "Lock City".
