Lion Island (from English lion 'lion' ) is a 2.5 km long and 1.5 km wide island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located off the east coast of Anvers Island and 1.5 km northeast of Cape Astrup at the northern end of Wiencke Island .
Participants in the Belgica expedition (1897-1899) of the Belgian polar explorer Adrien de Gerlache de Gomery discovered them. The descriptive name of the island is first recorded on a map based on surveys by the British Discovery Investigations from 1927. Viewed from the southwest, the profile of the island resembles a reclining lion .
