The Liquiñe Ofqui fault zone

The Liquiñe Ofqui Fault Zone is a large geological fault in the Chilean Andes . It extends for about 1000 km in a north-south direction. Its northernmost extension is marked by the thermal springs in the Liquiñe valley , its southernmost by the Ofqui isthmus .

Movements in the fault zone triggered an eruption of the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic complex after the Valdivia earthquake in 1960 . Movements in the fault zone could also have been the cause of other volcanic eruptions in this area.
