Lisa Lyon (* 1953 in Los Angeles ), after 1987 by adoption Lisa Lyon Lilly , is a former American bodybuilder . She became the first female world champion of the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB) in 1979 , but did not contest any more after this first competition of her life.

Life

Lyon studied art at the University of California in her hometown. At the same time she trained in the Japanese martial art kendo and began with weight training and bodybuilding for this sport. She gained great popularity when she won the IFBB Women's World Pro Bodybuilding Championships on June 16, 1979, becoming the first female bodybuilding world champion of the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB). After this success of her first competition up to that point, she resigned and refused to defend her title the following year. According to her own statement, she did not consider herself an athlete, but an artist whose work of art is her own body.

As a result of winning the title, it was mainly through regular appearances in various magazines of the bodybuilding scene and appeared regularly outside of sports reports in print media and talk shows. In the 10/1980 issue of the American Playboy magazine she was the first female bodybuilder to be featured in a photo story. In 1981 she published a guide called Lisa Lyon's Body Magic.

In 1980 she met the American scene photographer Robert Mapplethorpe , who was one of the most famous photographers at the time. Although he usually hardly used one model more than for a few shots, the two worked irregularly for two years and Mapplethorpe published an illustrated book in 1983 under the title Lady Lisa Lyon , in which he presented the portraits he created during these years. For the photographer, Lyon mainly posed for nudes that focus on her body. A short time later she also posed for nudes for the photographer Helmut Newton .

In 1986 she played a supporting role in the movie Vamp , in which Grace Jones also starred. A year later, she was adopted by John Cunningham Lilly as one of four adults (the others were Nina Castelluccio, Barbara Clarke, and Philip H. Bailey).
