Monument group, complex, prince stones | On May 28, 1388, the decisive battle in the twenty-year War of the Lüneburg Succession took place here. The Guelphs with the cities of Braunschweig and Celle defeated the Ascanians (House of Saxony-Wittenberg) with the city of Lüneburg. According to tradition, the stones are supposed to remind of two noble brothers (princes) who, fighting in the respective hostile armies, fatally injured each other and recognized each other as brothers when they died.
The left, smaller stone shows a bear paw from the coat of arms of the Counts of Hoya. The right stone shows a lily as a symbol of the Braunschweig patrician union. In 1906 the stones were moved here from a field. The right, north-facing stone with the lily has the monument ID 28957914. The left, south-facing stone with the bear's paw has the monument ID28928325. Also listed together as ID 33769602 within the monument group ID 33731088. |
