Bahnstadt - new 15th district of Heidelberg

Bahnstadt is currently (2013) Germany's largest inner-city settlement project. When the marshalling yard and freight yard was closed in 1997, an area of 116 hectares between the main station, Speyerer Strasse and Eppelheimer Strasse became available as a conversion area. Until then, this area was assigned to the districts of Weststadt and Wieblingen. The city decided to settle a new district with the name "Bahnstadt", which should offer living space for 5000 people and commercial space with around 7000 jobs. Everything should be done in accordance with the passive house standard. Naturally, there are only a few cultural monuments - the remains that were left over from the marshalling yard and the railway systems.

Water tower Czernyring 18/1 1907 When the Grand Ducal Badische Staatseisenbahn built a freight and marshalling yard in Heidelberg, Wayss & Freytag built the water tower on Czernyring in 1907 for the water supply . It was the first of the Baden Railway to be built in reinforced concrete frame construction according to Hennebique . The bottom of the water tank was designed according to the Intze principle with the edge sloping downwards and the bottom arched upwards in the middle, which enabled a particularly slim support structure for the tower building.

The painting is in the style of the Vienna Secession . The tower, which has been closed for operations, can currently (as of November 2013) be rented for events.
