↑ In the narrower sense, only the towers built by the British between 1798 and 1802 are called Martello Towers. But since they, like the Spanish Torre de Son Bou from 1805, retained the construction principle of the two Spanish towers from 1787, all 14 architecturally closely related towers are often called that.
