from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In contrast to those of Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's chamber music works are not so much the focus of his work. But he too wrote works in the field of string quartets and violin sonatas that are among the most frequently performed of their genre.

String quartet in E flat major KV 428 (1783) 3rd Haydn Quartet

This quartet is relatively unusual - the main theme of the first movement is performed in unison and consists of an octave jump followed by a tritone . In the meditative second movement, the theme (actually a series of broken chords) is introduced in the lower register and then taken over by the other voices. The last sentence is rich in surprising phrases.

The epithet alludes to the - at the time unusual - transverse positions in the Adagio introduction to the first movement. Contemporaries even suspected that the dissonances were typographical errors.

String Quartet in D major "Hoffmeister Quartet" KV 499 (1786)
